With the season well underway, we’re taking this opportunity to remind our members about how match days run at both Balcombe Heights and Bella Vista Ova, and the important role our Ground Officials play in maintaining that environment.
You will spot the Ground Officials on the sidelines in high-visibility vests. Their presence is mandatory at every Hills Football match; without a Ground Official, the game cannot proceed, and the club risks a fine. Beyond their required role, they ensure that our matches are safe, fair, and welcoming for everyone present.
The responsibilities of the Ground Officials, as outlined by Hills Football, include:
- Safety & Compliance: Ensuring that the field is safe before play (checking nets, corners, markers).
- Spectator Management: Monitoring behaviour and intervening when conduct becomes unacceptable.
- Technical Area Control: Limiting access to two authorised team officials per side.
- Supporting Match Officials: Creating a safe environment for referees, including escorting them to and from the field.
- Reporting: Submitting written reports to Hills Football regarding any breaches within 48 hours.
The last point is crucial. Aggressive, intimidating, or abusive behaviour towards referees, players, coaches, or other spectators will be reported to Hills Football every time. There will be no warnings or letting things slide.
It’s important to remember that many of the referees on our pitches are teenagers, with some in their first season. They are learning the game just like our kids are. Yelling at, abusing, or attempting to intimidate them isn’t a display of passion for football; rather, it is the primary reason young referees leave the sport. And without referees, there is no game.Â
The vast majority of our community behaves appropriately, cheering for their kids, supporting the officials, and allowing the game to unfold naturally. To everyone in that group, thank you.
For those who find themselves crossing the line, please listen when a Ground Official approaches you, step back when requested, and remember whose game this truly is.
Witnessed or been involved in an incident?Â
If you’ve been involved in or witnessed a significant incident during club activities, please complete our incident report form within 48 hours of the incident occuring.
We are One Football Family. Let’s keep it that way.
